Hand block-printing is one of the oldest textile arts in the world. Each metre of fabric passes through the hands of a craftsperson who aligns, presses, and lifts a carved wooden block dozens of times to build up a pattern. At ÏMAIMA we work with artisans who use natural and azo-free reactive dyes, so the prints carry depth and warmth — and with the right care they stay that way.
First Wash: What to Expect
Natural and reactive dyes go through a settling process in the first wash. You may notice a small amount of colour releasing into the water — this is normal and does not mean the dye is deficient. After the first wash the colour stabilises. To protect both your garment and anything else in your laundry, wash your block-print piece alone or only with similar deep colours the first time.
Wash Separately
Even after the first wash, we recommend washing block-print pieces separately from light or white fabrics. Reactive dyes are colourfast, but washing with strongly contrasting colours is an unnecessary risk for any dyed textile.
Detergent
Use a gentle, pH-neutral detergent — one marketed for delicates or for colours. Avoid detergents that contain bleach, optical brighteners, or enzymes, as these can dull or alter reactive dye shades over time. A small amount is enough; excess detergent is harder to rinse out fully and can leave a residue that makes colours look flat.
Hand-washing in cool water is ideal. If you use a machine, choose a delicate or hand-wash cycle at 30 °C or below.
Drying
Turn the garment inside out before drying. Lay flat or hang in the shade — direct sunlight causes reactive dyes to fade faster. Avoid tumble-drying, which stresses both the dye and the fabric weave.
Ironing
If ironing is needed, do so on the reverse side while the fabric is still slightly damp. Use a medium heat setting appropriate for the fibre content listed on the care label. Do not iron directly over the printed surface.
Storage
Store folded or hung in a cool, dry place away from prolonged exposure to light. Avoid storing in plastic bags, which can trap moisture; a cotton garment bag is ideal for pieces you want to protect between seasons.
The Prints Are Made to Last
Block-print textiles that are cared for properly develop a gentle softness over time without losing their character. The slight irregularities you see in the repeat — the places where the block pressed a little deeper, or where two impressions meet — are the mark of a human hand. They are not flaws; they are the craft.
