How to take care of your hand-embroidered IMAIMA piece

Hand-embroidered garments are one-of-a-kind; they require special care to maintain their quality and longevity. Here are some care instructions for your hand-embroidered ÏMAIMA garment:

Hand Wash: Hand-embroidered garments should be washed by hand in cool water with mild detergent. Hot water should be avoided as it can cause the embroidery thread to shrink or bleed. We shouldn't be washing them after every use. Overwashing clothes gradually degrade the fibres. Instead, if you notice a dirty patch, try spot cleaning it or give it a light steam and air it out. Only washing your clothes when absolutely necessary will help them last longer.

Avoid using harsh detergents and bleach: Harsh detergents and bleach can cause the embroidery thread to fade or weaken. Always use a gentle detergent that will not harm the fabric or embroidery.

Always check the wash-care label: The temperature listed on the care labels is an indication of the maximum temperature you should set your machine to. It's the most your garment can withstand before literally breaking. Aim for 10°C less than the temperature indicated.

Do not soak: Do not soak hand-embroidered garments for an extended period of time, as this can cause the embroidery thread to become loose or damaged.

Lay flat to dry: After washing, press the garment gently to remove excess water and lay it flat to dry. Wringing or twisting the fabric can cause the embroidery thread to tangle or break. Each dryer is estimated to emit more than a tonne of carbon dioxide per year. Cutting back on your dryer use will significantly reduce your household's energy consumption and carbon footprint, as well as save you money. So getting rid of the dryer is a no-brainer.

Iron with caution: When ironing hand-embroidered garments, use a low heat setting and cover the embroidery with a pressing cloth to avoid direct contact with the iron. This will keep the embroidery thread from melting or disintegrating.

Properly store: Hand-embroidered garments should be folded carefully and stored in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. Hanging them causes the fabric and embroidery to stretch and become misshapen.

Hand-embroidered garments require special care and should not be washed or ironed on a regular basis. It is best to only wash the garment when absolutely necessary. However, the beautiful embroidered garments are like art pieces, and they last for a longer period of time if they are carefully stored.
